I'm a masters (50) cat 1 racer.  No stage race experience, but have done a bunch of 100 milers with some decent results.  I'm hoping to put up a good ride at Breck so am thinking the personal best plan.  Being 50 are there adjustments to the plan I should make, or is the finisher plan a better option?

Also, which plan would you recommend as a precursor?  I'm doing 6-8 hours a week now, not really training; commuting and having fun on the mtn bike.  I need to get a bit more focused both for Breck and for some early season races.

And finally, all my weekday riding will be during my commute.  My min total commute time is about 2hrs.  If the workout calls for less time, just easy spin for the extra time?

      thanks

      Rob,

I recommend you follow the 7-Day Mountain Bike Stage Race – Personal Record Plan if your plan is to train hard and race as fast as you can. I recommend you follow the
7-Day Mountain Bike Stage Race – Finishers Plan if your goal is to comfortably complete the stage race at a happy smile pace. Just finishing Breck Epic is still a challenge!

The best precursor plan depends on your choice of the above. Let me know and I can recommend the best plan.

Fitting in your training into commuting is great. If you do need to ride overtime you are correct – just make the extra time easy spinning.

      Hi Lynda,

Thanks.  I'd say train hard, race hard would be the goal.  If that fails, it will likely be suffer like a dog and hope to crawl across the finish line in one piece.  I think smiling will be involved either way.

Starting Monday you have 23 weeks to Breck Epic.

3/4 – I recommend you start with the 12 week Masters 40+ Cross Country Base Training Plan

5/27 – Start the 7-Day Mountain Bike Stage Race – Personal Record Plan. Miss out week #3 of this plan to chop it down to 11 weeks and peak on time for Breck Epic.
