I am racing a 120 km mtb race this summer and I am using one of your 100 miler xc race plans. Because the race that I will be doing is 40 kms shorter than the race that your training plan is based on, how much should I pare back my training? The plan that I am using is the 40+ Masters Personal Best.

What is your target finish time for the 120km? Is it a fast flat road course or slow technical hilly course?

Its a slow techy & hilly course – about 11,000 feet of climbing. My finish time would be about 10 to 11 hrs.

I recommend following the 40+ Masters 100 mile PR training plan as-is for a race that will take 10-11 hours. Although your course is shorter in distance it is as long in duration than the average 100 mile mtb race.

Thank you! I have a B race (6 hr race) on week 6 of the plan and unfortunately it falls on a weekend of shorter rides where the weekends before and after have longer rides. Is it doable to switch them around so that one of my longer ride weekends falls on the race weekend?

I recommend switching day 6 and 7 in week 5 with day 6 and 7 in week 6. In week 6 do your race one day and take the other weekend day off. Keep the week days 1-5 as-is. This will send you into your race recovered and ready for a good ride. In week 7, drop the day 2 ride in favor of passive rest. Continue to ride at recovery pace in week 7 until you feel ready to return to training.
