ParticipantHi Lynda,
About 13 weeks ago I started using the 6 hour pr plan just in case I was able to compete in an ultra endurance mtb race. Turns out about 9 weeks into the training I confirmed that I'd be able to make it to the race but it was too late at that point to start another more appropriate plan at that point so I continued on with the plan.
The race was the CFITT, a 240 mile race across the state of Florida. Despite not using the right plan and having my longest ride at around 7 hours, I had a pretty good ride and finished in just over 25 hours.
Now for my question. I'm considering doing the Huracan, a 300mi loop in Florida on March 8. Should I get the 24 hour pr plan or is there something better to use for an ultra race? I'd like to finish it in one shot so I figured I should avoid the stage race plan.
Any thoughts?
If I don't do the Huracan I'll be doing a 6 hr race sometime in March but I'm not sure of the date.
Thanks,
Bryan

KeymasterBryan,
The Arizona Trail Race 300 Training Plan is the best plan to train for the Huracan bikepacking event. You have a different race planned but same distance, non-stop format and self-supported rules.

ParticipantThanks for the advice. Not sure if I should start a new thread for this but I was thinking about my plans for next year and would like your advice on stacking plans.
I just finished CFITT on November 17th. Took last week mostly off the bike – did a short ride on Tuesday and another 2 hour ride Thursday. Didn't ride last weekend.
My ideal season would look something like this…
1/5/12 – 12 Hours of Amelia. 12 hours solo.
3/8/12 Huracan 300. 300 miles self supported.
3/24/12 Squiggy Classic 6 hr race. Again, solo. I'm also guessing the race date. They haven't posted it but last year it was late March.
4/21/12 Hammerhead 100. 50 or 100 mile race with 25 mile laps. Would lean towards the 100 unless you think the 50 works best for my plans so far.
9/1/12 8 hours of Labor – 8 hr race, I'd more than likely do it solo but a friend may want to team up for this.
I have your 6hr pr plan but will need others. Can you suggest how to fit the plans into that schedule?
Thanks again,
Bryan

KeymasterBryan,
Here is how I recommend stacking the training plans to fit your season:
12/17/2012 – start the Arizona Trail Race 300 Training Plan to peak for Huracan 300.
3/11/13 – Week off for recovery
3/18/13 – Follow week #12 from your 6 hour plan and race Squiggy Classic 6 hr
3/25/2013 – Follow weeks 9-12 of your 6 hour plan and race Hammerhead 100
4/22/2013 – Week off for recovery
4/29/2013 – Follow weeks 1-6 Category 1 Cross Country Mountain Bike Build, Peak and Race Training Plan to add speed
6/10/2013 – Follow weeks 1-12 of your 6 hour plan and peak again for 8 hours of Labor

ParticipantThanks again, Lynda. My only remaining question is will the 12 hours of Amelia fit in ok on 1/5/13? Perhaps I could bundle that weekends workouts into one big race?

Keymaster12 hours of Amelia fit in nicely. Do the race and miss out the weekend training rides. Take a few days off after the race until you are recovered enough to get back on plan.
