      Hi Lynda,

I was wondering if you could answer a question about Training Peaks for me. I have set my power zones up identically on my Garmin( using your hr/power calculator) and on Training Peaks. It seems though that for my workouts, Training Peaks will have me riding at a power above your suggested zone. For example, last night I did a 30 minute zone 3 workout, but Training Peaks had me riding at mostly a z4 power for those 30 minutes. My HR did stay in z3 though. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

      Thanks, Tristan

      Hi Tristan,

It is not correct to ride any workout a zone up. This leads to over-training. It is likely you have a device syncing issue somewhere.

Check you have your threshold power set accurately in Garmin Connect. Each time you sync your Garmin it will sync with the Garmin Connect values and over-ride anything you have manually entered into your head unit. Also check your threshold value in TP is current and accurate.

Ok I have checked my threshold and power zones on garmin connect and training peaks, they are both set accurately. But yesterday training peaks still wanted me in z4, not z3 which I was supposed to be in. I’m confused. I apologize ahead of time as I am not very tech savvy, but it seems I must be doing something wrong.

      Some questions to troubleshoot:

      1. What other 3rd party apps are you using?
      2. What was your 20 min average HR from your performance test?
      3. What number are you using in TrainingPeaks for your threshold heart rate?
      4. What was your 20 min average power from your performance test?
      5. What number are you using in TrainingPeaks for your threshold power?

      1. I’m not using any other 3rd party apps

      2. My 20 minute avg HR was 165, and that’s what I’m using in training peaks as my threshold HR

      3. My 20 minute avg power was 263, and that’s what I’m using in training peaks as my threshold power

      Thanks, Tristan

      Hi Tristan,

Bingo we found your issue. We use 95% of 20 min average power as threshold power. Your threshold power is 263w x 0.95 = 250w. Enter 250w for threshold power in TP and Garmin Connect.

      Hi Lynda,

I’ve noticed that the way training peaks and garmin connect calculate my zones using my threshold power are slightly different than yours. just by a few watts here and there, is that ok? Training peaks allows me to choose a “method” before calculating, is there a specific method you suggest? Or should I go in and manually adjust my zones to match yours identically, if possible. thanks again, Tristan

We use power training method “Andy Coggan”

Zones being off 1-2 watts is ok. If they are off further, manually edit them.

See your training plan week 1 day 2 for full instructions:

CALCULATING YOUR HEART RATE ZONES: Use the TrainingPeaks training zones calculator found in the SETTINGS > ZONES tab as follows:

      1. In TrainingPeaks open your athlete account setting page and select Zones (click on your name > settings > zones).

      2. Enter the average heart rate from your 20-minute test into the Threshold Heart Rate box.

      3. Choose type “Lactate Threshold” from the drop-down menu in the auto calculation box.

      4. Choose method “Joe Friel for Cycling” in the drop-down menu in the auto calculation box.

      5. Click Calculate > Apply > Save.

CALCULATING YOUR POWER LEVELS: Use the TrainingPeaks training zones calculator found in the SETTINGS > ZONES tab as follows:

      1. In TrainingPeaks open your athlete account setting page and select Zones (click on your name > settings > zones).

      2. Enter the average power from your 20-minute test x 0.95 into the Threshold Power box. For example if your average 20 min power is 200w, enter 190w into the threshold power box (200w x 0.95 = 190w).

      3. Choose type “Threshold Power” from the drop-down menu in the auto calculation box.

      4. Choose method “Andy Coggan” in the drop-down menu in the auto calculation box.

      5. Click Calculate > Apply > Save.
