ParticipantHello!
I am working a plan to train for a 50K (31-mile) race that’s in 40 weeks (July 20-ish, 2024), with a goal to get a PR. I am planning on a B event 3-4 weeks before.
My questions:
Recommended training stack? I am a female, 43, decent fitness from this season, middle of the pack rider in races, my weaknesses are strength/stamina for punchy/technical climbs and technical climbs/descents, and I live in a place where it snows a lot in the winter.
Indoor training For indoor training, I only have access to a Peloton. Does this work well with the plans? I also have gym access for strength work/cross training.
I’m also open to some consult time to figure all of this out if you think that would be worthwhile.
Thank you in advance! I’m excited to get started.

KeymasterHi Renee,
40 weeks is lots of time to train. You can make significant gains in 40 weeks! Tell me a little more about your 50k race. Is it hilly? Technical? What is your goal finish time?

ParticipantHi Coach Lynda,
Ha ha. Good point 😉
Overall, my goal for the 40 weeks is to be more focused about off-season training for the bike (which I’m hopeful will crossover to backcountry snowboarding, XC skiing, etc.), with some ramp-up time before the event. I’m pretty good about working out regularly, but I lack focus and purpose unless I’m in the thick of MTB season.
The 50K is part of a Leadville qualifier event, but just one lap of the actual 100K qualifier, so definitely hilly (4,500+ elevation) and relatively technical. I have done 30-mile MTB rides in the backyard at a sub 3:40:00 time, but never as part of a race or with nearly that much climbing.
SO, my goal for the 50K is to finish around the 4:15:00 mark. There’s another event one month prior that’s an XC 24 or 32-miler I’d like to compete strongly in. Maybe that’s my A event and the 50K has a goal to finish strongly.
I’m sorry for all the detail. If you think it is appropriate to do a phone consult, I’m happy to pay for your time.
Many thanks,
Renee - October 6, 2023 at 7:53 pm #27230

KeymasterHi Renee,
Thanks for the additional info. I recommend you follow this training plan stack to reach your goals.
Masters 40+ Mountain Bike Base Mountain Bike Training Plan
Masters 40+ Cross Country Mountain Bike Build Peak and Race Mountain Bike Training Plan
Masters 40+ 50 Mile Mountain Bike Personal Record Mountain Bike Training Plan
Add a week off training into your schedule after the first 2 plans for additional rest or to catch up on a missed week. Schedule the final plan to end on your race week.
The workouts will not sync to Peloton like they can for Zwift and other smart trainer apps. Use this Power Zone Library & Timing Tool to search for matching classes on Peloton
