ParticipantI have a few questions so I'll split them into two posts: this one is general, the other more specific:
Thanks for your earlier comments, as you may remember I was interested in the 6hr solo finisher plan to use to train for two offroad events with finish times in the 4.5-6hr range. I have purchased the 6-hr plan thru' Training Peaks. I've read it over and have a few questions:
1) Until I start the plan 12 wks out from my event, I'm doing what you suggested and doing 60-70% of the workouts and still running. I presume I bypass the 20 min HR test wk 1 until doing the plan for real?

Keymaster1) Include the 20 min HR test this first time through. It will give you a good baseline number and also give you a test practice. These tests sometimes take a time or 2 to figure out how to pace accurately.
2) The 12 weeks is 2 x 3 week cycles (2 train/1 rest), then a 4 week cycle push (3 train/1 rest), then 2 week taper/race. When you are in the 3rd week of the 4 week cycle back down the intensity if you feel it is pushing you over your recovery limit.
3) Most athletes are greyhounds at heart and will GO at max once the gun goes off despite zone 2 goals. If you can ride zone 2 in a race situation go for it. If you are a greyhound don't go there.

ParticipantThanks. Your first answer made me groan, your last answer made me laugh. All so true!
