ParticipantHello Lynda,
I finally have dates for the core events of my season. I will be racing all of these on the singlespeed. As I'm sure you know, these are all NUE Series races and are~100 miles in length. I will be on the road for racing and vacation from ~06/24-07/28. I will have geared and SS bikes with me and plan on training while on the trip. I am not 100% decided on racing the Breck 100 yet due to the altitude and the demands of the season. I may opt out in favor of training/recovery but I will be in the area around that time so it is enticing. I am looking to have a solid season but these races all hold the same “importance” to me. I am obviously working to peak for Cohutta and would like your guidance on what to do from there. There will be a few more races scattered in there but the ones listed are the “meat and potatoes” of my season. Thank you!
02/16 Southern Cross – 50 mile gravel grind on SS.
04/27 Cohutta 100
05/11 Wildcat Epic
05/18 Pisgah 111k – Not a NUE but same format and as taxing as any NUE.
06/01 Mohican MTB100
06/29 Tatanka 100
07/14 Breckenridge 100
07/27 Wilderness 101
08/18 Hampshire 100
09/01 Shenandoah 100
09/08 Fool’s Gold 100
09/14 Pisgah Monster Cross Challenge – 70 miles of gravel on SS.

KeymasterKelly,
Building up to a peak fitness at Cohutta is exactly correct. After that, most of your season should not contain much in the way of training but be race and rest. Focus on recovery and make sure you hit each start line fresh. The racing is your training.
- On race weeks follow week #12 of your 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race – Personal Record Plan
- The week after a hundie rest hard. Take 3 days off your bike then complete the week with light easy spins.
That takes care of every week of your season except for 6/10, 6/17 and 8/5
6/10 – follow week #10 and 6/17 follow week #11 of your 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race – Personal Record Plan
8/5 follow week # 11 of your 100 Mile Mountain Bike Race – Personal Record Plan

ParticipantHello Lynda,
First off, thanks for the awesome plans. I thoroughly enjoyed working through the plans and feel that they put me into position to have a successful season. Unfortunately, I continue to have issues with a compressed vertebrae and bulging disc which in turn is causing me to drop the remaining NUE races from my season. This leaves me with huge gaps in the season and a different focus.
As of now, I am going to focus on ultracross, marathon and some XC racing. My main priority will be to do well in the 3-5 hour range on gravel. I am uncertain on my schedule and will pick and choose for the rest of the season. I would like to maintain a high level of fitness however I am not looking to necessarily peak for any particular race.
I am also thinking that I would like to work with loose structure for the remainder of the season with maybe some interval/speed work during the week and longer group/endurance rides on the weekends. Do you have any advice as far as types of workouts I should include week to week for my new focus?
I appreciate your time,
Kelly

KeymasterKelly,
Sorry to hear your back is not up to completing the NUE season. That's frustrating. It does however open up a good time block for you to work on getting faster!
I recommend you pick up the LW Coaching SINGLE SPEED Cross Country Mountain Bike Build, Peak and Race Training Plan and use that as a template for your loosely structured training plan. The longest ride in this plan is 3 hours as the focus is on building speed. You already have your endurance in place this season. I recommend you add in a ride longer than 3 hours only once per month and only if your back feels great. Count any race over 3 hours as your longer ride for that month.
Limiting long rides works towards both speed development and back healing.

ParticipantSounds great Lynda. Since I have been focusing primarily on 100 milers the past few years, I am looking forward to seeing how the speed work plays out. As always, thank you!
