ParticipantLynda – I recently completed 24 weeks of training using the Weight Loss and Base MTB Training Plan followed by the 12 Hour Solo PR MTB Training Plan. I used these plans to primarily prepare for the Dirty Kanza and a 9 Hour race in July, but my 9 hour race is not going to happen now due to work conflict.
Now that I have finished the DK, I am eager to train and race again. I have set my sights set on another gravel grinder called Heck of the North (115 mile) on 10/4. I also want to work in a bikepacking trip on the Vapor Trail 125 route 8/30 – 9/1.
First question: should I use a master’s level training program? I am asking because I felt miserable during some parts of the 12 Hour Solo PR plan, and actually got sick in week 8 with an upper respiratory infection after pushing hard during weeks 5 – 7. I definitely lost some fitness. I am 42 years young 🙂
Second question: if I use the Masters 40+ 100 Mile PR Plan and start it 12 weeks from race day, what should I do in the meantime to maintain any fitness gained from training for the DK and the race itself? I just finished an entire week off going stir crazy. Today I did a 30 min core workout followed by stretching and foam roller, but want to start riding again.
Thanks in advance for your help! ~ Paul

Keymaster1) I highly recommend the Masters 40+ MTB 100 Mile Personal Record Training Plan.
Start the plan in 6/16 and follow all 12 weeks up to your bikepacking trip on the Vapor Trail 125 route 8/30 – 9/1.
9/8 – take a week off plan for recovery
9/15 – follow week 10
9/22 – follow week 11
9/29 – follow week 12 and peak for your Heck of the North (115 mile) on 10/4.Heck of the North (115 mile) on 10/4.Lynda
