ParticipantHi Lynda,
As this season starts to wind down I am starting the process of planning training for next season. I am looking at my first mountain bike stage race next year (Fernie Singletrack 3 – June 25-27) with the objective to finish. I am 54, I ride structured plans on a trainer and outdoors for fitness and to support challenging recreational riding but in the past with no specific goal events.
In the plans the suggested order for me appears to LW Coaching Masters 40+ plans for Cross Country Mountain Bike Base Training Plan, Cross Country Mountain Bike Build, Peak and Race Training Plan prior the to the Mountain Bike 3-4 day Stage Race Plan.
I am seeking some advice through the winter season. Our family time is spent alpine skiing typically at least one day each weekend but frequently 2 days, typically full ski days ~5-6 hours. This will likely occur through portions of the base and build plans and possibly even into the stage race plan.
Given the early season timing of the above race, can you provide some guidance or general rules for balancing or making up some of the bike time in the plans that will be displaced by alpine skiing? Despite the lack of cardio and bike specificity can skiing be substituted for trainer bike activity?
Thanks, Rob

KeymasterHi Rob,
That’s great you are planning ahead.
This is the perfect order of plans: LW Coaching Masters 40+ plans for Cross Country Mountain Bike Base Training Plan, Cross Country Mountain Bike Build, Peak and Race Training Plan prior the to the Mountain Bike 3-4 day Stage Race Plan.
One option is to shift the training plan one day back so day #1 of each week falls on your Sunday instead of the usual Monday. You can strength train (day 1 session) on day 1 (your Sunday) before skiing to stay on plan. On a week where you are skiing both Sat and Sun, drop either the day 6 or day 7 ride and replace with your ski day.
