If I will be doing my long ride of the week on an indoor trainer instead of outdoors do I still ride for the same prescribed time? I’m on a PR 100k MTB plan with a long ride of 5 hours this week. Due to weather I will be on a trainer so do I keep the length of time or does it change?

Ideally the answer is yes but 5-hours on the trainer is a tough one to pull off. Can you ride for a short time outdoors? Do you have another outdoor aerobic activity you can do instead?

Hi Coach Lynda-
when you ask can I ride outdoors for a sort time you are suggesting just that I break up the monotony of the long ride that way, not that I shorten the ride? Would a 6 hour adventure race that is split between foot/bike be an alternative? The pace would be mellow as it will be at a family pace so we would be hiking, not running and the bike pace would be spinning ( zone 1-2).

Yes, I am suggesting breaking up the monotony of a long indoor ride by accumulating other aerobic activities to make up a similar duration.
Substituting an adventure race for a long ride is great for one week. I don’t recommend doing it every week.
