Week 5,  Masters 40+ cross country, build, peak, plan.

First B race this past weekend, second race in series.  Used race prep from plan for B race the week before.  Felt fine morning of race, conditions were raining, cold (for Georgia), and muddy.  Mud covered HR readout during race, RPE for whole race 10.  After race avg. BPM were 10 less than the first race 5 weeks ago.

Got passed in the last mile by a rider I have been beating easily last season and in the first race this year.  I ended up 3/11.

I was riding cautious due to the slick conditions as I have very little experience racing MTBs in the mud, but I feel like my effort was equal to the first race even though my average HR was quite a bit less.

The next races are May 19, May 26, June 9, and June 30.  Sound like everythings going as it should?  The group I race with trains at a much higher intensity and duration than I am and that's got my confidence a little shaky.

This is a tough one to come up with an answer for in a forum format as there is so much background required for an accurate analysis of your training.

Low HR's could be due to the cold or possibly racing at a lower intensity due to the higher technical demands of the mud.

Low HR's could also be from over-training or under-recovery. Review this Tools to Speed Recovery article to see if there is anything you can do to improve your recovery.

Week #5 is the second week of a training block and you would be carrying fatigue into it. There was a long of intensity in the schedule in week #4 and #5. Fatigue will depress heart rate and performance.

Nail your rest week this week, unload your fatigue and see what your performance benchmark test on Saturday tells you.
