ParticipantHi Lynda – so glad I found your Facebook Q&A forum through Erica Tingey! I rooted around on your site a bit and found your suggested stacking for a competitive rider who wanted to do the Breck Epic on a SS. I have the same goal, except I’ll probably stick to the finishers plan, not the PR plan due to time constraints. Just finishing will be a challenge enough for me; first time doing a MTB stage race.
However, doing the math, there are not enough weeks left for Breck to do the 3 suggested plans in a row (SS base, SS build, stage race finishers). Which one do you suggest I shorten? Just a bit of info: I’ve raced a bunch of endurance races of about 6 hours on my SS in 2013, and also did cyclocross until about a month ago. I just started back in (self-coached) base building last week after a few weeks of not doing much (needed a break). I’ll paste my schedule below with spme additional races sprinkled in; none except for Skyway Epic on May 18 is an A priority race till Breck. Hope you can give spme guidance and then I’ll get started on your plans!

KeymasterBased on your races and timing I recommend you follow these two plans:
100 km Mountain Bike Race – Personal Record Plan
7-Day Mountain Bike Stage Race – Finishers Plan
On these two plans do all of your skills and endurance rides on your SS bike. Recovery rides and interval sessions are good to do on a geared bike if you have one so you can nail your target intensity. If you are time crunched, drop all the recovery rides in favor of passive rest.
Here is a table with how to lay out the weeks with your schedule:
Plan Plan week Event Week notes 100km PR 1 2 3 Snake Creek Gap #2 SS – 34 miles, C priority Race Sat, Sun off. 4 5 6 potentially Southern Cross – probably not Race Sat, Sun off. 12 Snake Creek Gap #3 on my SS (B race) 7 8 9 10 11 potentially local MTB race, C priority 7 8 9 10 potentially local MTB race, C priority 11 12 Skyway Epic ~60 miles, bunch of climbing, SS, A priority off plan Recovery week Stage race Finisher 1 Bump and Grind local MTB race, B priority Race Sat, Sun off. 3 4 5 6 local MTB race, C priority 7 8 local MTB race, C priority Race Sat, big ride Sun 9 10 11 12 Breck Epic starting on the 10th - January 9, 2014 at 3:09 pm #7575
