ParticipantHi there,
Just a question regarding heart rate as it pertains to training. I am doing the PR 50 mile plan, but currently jumped from week one to week 6 as perscribed by you. I did a field test the first week, but had to do it indoors in a spinning room. My “Threshold” heart rate indoors, is what I am now noticing I hit outdoors when attempting zone 4. Now I am questioning my zones in general. Can it vary this much from being inside to being outside? Should I re-test? I guess i should also mention I thought I hit higher numbers in the main part of my year last year. am I that out of shape? Or does that prove I cannot motivate for tests. Have you ever known someone to not test well?
Thanks!

KeymasterIndoor heart rates are usually higher than outdoor heart rates. Yes, re-test outdoors.
Hitting higher HR numbers does not mean you are fitter. Going faster means you are fitter. Lower heart rates for the same power means your cardiovascular system is stronger and you are fitter.

ParticipantI wish I had a power meter but I dont. That said, I am still not able to get a good test in. I feel faster since I have been following the plan for a few weeks, but I am not getting my hr up to where I saw it go last year. I am sort of guessing my average based on that. What is the danger in guessing where you are if you are indeed off a few beats from where you should be? Should I try to hit zones in the middle so I dont risk going too hard/too easy? I am a bit frustrated with myself.

KeymasterAthlete's heart rates can drop as fitness increases. I do not recommend using heart rates from last year when you were less fit. That is a mistake.
Use our training intensity guidelines table to hone in on the correct heart rate and training intensity.
I recommend using the above table to estimate your HR zones in absence of a good test, not last years values.
