MemberHey! I’d been training several weeks, preparing to a 50 mile race. But, tomorrow i have my first race experience on preparation to the 50 miler(30km lenght of tomorrows race). The race its at night :S.
trainning program its going excelent so far! kinda nervous thou. The course its flat the first 12 km, the we have a 10 km killer hill and a 10 km fast descent. Got two questions please!
When its to hilly, even if im at 1-1 gear, cannot mantain 90 rpm cadence, should i race the whole race with a lower cadence? such as 70 – 80 or drop it on the hill? Should i begin strong and reduce pacing or begin slow an pace up? Thanks u again! Any other tips are welcome! - June 23, 2012 at 4:55 pm #6956

KeymasterJose,
Start conservatively and finish fast. Use heart rate, PE or power to pace yourself not cadence. Never keep cadence high when you have run out of gears. Drop your cadence to keep on target HR zone.
Good luck.

MemberLynda:
Thanks!! The training program it's going great, i feel stronger and secure! As I last posted, i had my first race and came really good! I was 25th of 250 racers and 13th in my categorie! I was one of the toughest races on my country calendar, and it was at night!
I did as suggested, i used HR to pace myself, began conservatively and got stronger, by the end I was really close to the elite peloton!
Thanks once again!
