MemberHi Lynda,
I’m new to mountain biking. I come from an ultrarunning background so have a good fitness level but don’t have bike specific fitness (although I did move into ultras from Ironman tris, so I used to). I’m looking at doing a 100miler in September and was thinking what plans to follow. I was thinking of spending the next few weeks just getting out on the bike and having fun and then following the winter training plan (not winter here in Aus, but I’m guessing it works well as a base builder)
And then the 100mile finisher plan.
Does that sound like a good option?
Also is there any issue in adding very easy rides. Reason I ask is for some of the longer mid-week rides I might combine them with my commute to work (about 80-90mins each way, depending how hard I ride). But that would obviously mean I need to ride home.
Thanks very much!

KeymasterThe winter plan followed by the 100 miler plan is a great combo.
Commuting can fit into the plan. Where possible count your commuting miles as training. Some days the training calls for an easy 90 min ride. Other days you could do your workout during the commute.
Another option is to commute only once per day. Drive to work with your bike, ride home that day, ride in to work the following day and drive home at the end of the day. I have several athletes follow that sequence twice per week. You can fill your car with a cooler containing healthy food and clean clothes to access at work.
