ParticipantHi Lynda – This is not a question specifically about MTB training.
I had shoulder surgery last winter which kept me off my bikes for 6 months. I got on my trainer a week post-op and followed the LW Broken Collar Bone plan for a several weeks but found it a little too demanding, I switched to a time crunched plan from a book I have (Carmichael) and was able to follow through with that. I think I was able to preserve some power that way, but endurance is way off. Specifically, I ride fast enough initially, but have trouble keeping up for the last half hour of the weekly 2-hour group road ride, which was quite doable for me last fall; and my favorite single track circuit feels way too long!
I want to ride the Mt. Baker Hill Climb on Sept. 9, 2018, a 4900′ climb in 24 miles on the road. I’ve done it before for fun, this time I’d like to push myself. Please recommend a plan that will help with this, I’ll be riding my mtb once or twice a week also.
Best regards and thanks.

KeymasterHi Steve,
After a lay-off this long I recommend you start back with a 12 week Base plan to re-build your base before attempting to peak for a race. By starting with our Masters 40+ Mountain Bike Base Mountain Bike Training Plan on July 2nd you will have plenty fitness to ride the Mt. Baker Hill Climb on Sept. 9th.
Adjust any exercises in the strength and core training sessions to maximize continued health and recovery of your shoulder.
