      Hi Lynda,

I’m based in the UK. I’ve just signed up for one of the first UK gravel events. The Dirty Reiver 200 based in Kielder. I know you don’t have any gravel specific plans, but thought you might recommend something from your MTB plans? The distance is in km’s by the way! It’s in mid April 2016. I’m 48 and cycle, mostly road, about 8000 km’s a year and aim to climb about 100,000 metres a year.

I was hoping I might be able to adapt one of your plans to my needs? Sorry if it’s a daft question!

      Mark,

Many of our athletes are training for gravel grinder events. With a little more info I can recommend the best plan for you.

      1. How long do you think it will take you to finish the Dirty Reiver 200?

      2. Are you racing single-speed or gears?

Thanks for the reply. There’s a fair bit of elevation involved, about 3500 metres. A normal 200 km on the road and on my own, would take me about 7 to 8 hours. Having never done a gravel event, it’s difficult to say, but I would hope around 9 and hopefully no more than 10, fingers crossed and very much weather dependent!

That sounds like a tough event!

I recommend you start on Dec 21st with the Masters 40+ MTB Cross Country Base Training Plan and follow weeks 1-5.

Jan 25th, 2016 – Switch to the Masters 40+ MTB 100 Mile Personal Record Training Plan and follow all 12 weeks to a peak performance at Dirty Reiver 200 on April 16th.

      Mark,
Hows your training going? I am also doing the event.
I am not sure what bike to use, due to the climbing involved. I was going to use my cx bike and lower the gearing, but having thought about it I might just strip down my Touring Bike. MTb would be perfect for the descents! Shame I still ride a 26 er!
I find the LW plans very good
