DaveKeymasterLynda,
I'm on week 4 of your Race/Peak plan and everything is going well. I feel strong and for the first time I feel like I can keep up with the other guys at the front. So it was this weekend at Sea Otter. I started top 10 and moved up quickly to the top five. I was strong and felt great until I hit mile 15. It was the end of a decent and the start of what is the last miles of climbing and climbing.
My legs ached and every time I closed my eyes to blink I would literally see stars when I opened them again. I finished but it was all granny gear from there because I was afraid to hurt myself. I still did well because I was ahead of the group but I'm still trying to figure out what happened. I had about 12oz of electrolyte replenishing drink while warming up for about 35 minutes and ate a whole grain slice of bread and an avocado. The night before was not very restful because we were camping, it was uncomfortable, it was noisy and I was nervous.
During the race, I had already had about 14oz of electrolyte drink and 4oz of water. I'm just looking to hear from you and your wisdom as I try to figure out what happened. I know you don't know all the other factors surrounding what happened.
Thank you in advance.

KeymasterAvocado is high in fat and best avoided immediately prior to a race. High fat products slow gastric emptying which is especially important to avoid on hot days. Products high in gluten like whole wheat bread also slow gastric emptying.

MemberNo fun at all. One thing that I have repeated to myself and have read on your website is to NEVER try something new on race day. Well, I did not listen this time and paid the consequenses.
I've always had cereal before I train or race and it has worked, at least I did not just run out of fuel. This time I ate what I mentioned. Man, some lessons are better learned.
Thank you for your response.
