ParticipantHi Lynda, I used one of your training plans last year for a 100k MTB race, thanks.
I am building up for the Kiwi Brevet, 1100km self supported race in February next year. If I purchase the AZT 300 plan are there any changes you would suggest for the additional distance? The Kiwi Brevet is nowhere near as brutal as the AZT so maybe the plan is fine as it is.
I completed the Kiwi Brevet in 2012 and am hoping to improve next year.
Thanks, Scott

KeymasterScott,
How do you plan on riding the Brevet? Is your aim to go as fast as you can and sleep very little or ride a reasonable distance daily and take a full night of sleep?

ParticipantHi Lynda, thanks for getting back to me.
I need sleep 🙂
In the KB you are supposed to stop for a minimum of six hours straight in any given 24 period.
I managed to average 200km per day last time but suffered really bad chafing. Yes I will be doing reasonalble days and trying to get a “full” nights sleep.
I want to beat five days.
Thanks, Scott

KeymasterScott,
I recommend the 7-Day Mountain Bike Stage Race – Personal Record Plan as the best plan for you to follow for this event.

ParticipantLynda, thanks for you answer.
Can you give me an insite to the differences in the two programmes?
Later in the programme would I put in some overnighters? TBH that is the appealing thing about the “training”, the adventure of getting out in the hills. I don't want to sacrafice this part of the training.
Thanks again, Scott

KeymasterThe AZT300 plan has more endurance and less speed work than the stage race plan. The AZT300 plan has a LOT of hike-a-bike training as the AZT course has a LOT of hike-a-biking on course. The AZT plan has gear practice and fueling practice to get your self-supported logistics dialed before race day. The 7 day SR plan has none of this. The AZT300 plan has overnight practice which I agree is adventurous and really fun 🙂
Both plans will prepare you well. With the stage race plan there are several weekends where you ride 6 hours per day both on Sat and Sunday. You can carry all your self supported gear and do an overnight stop in the hills if you like on these weekends.
Does than answer it?
