      Lynda, hello.

I am feeling a bit of a fraud being on this forum, but I assure you I wouldn’t be posting or wasting your time if I didn’t think it was appropriate.

I am looking to undertake a 10+ day bike-packing race around the west coast of Ireland in June but it is in fact all on road. It is 2218km/1550 miles with 20,205m/66,293ft of climbing that is “purposefully fed into prevailing winds.” I have looked time and time again through Training Peaks and the only plan that seems to go someway towards my goal is your. 5 – 10 day Bikepacking Race Mountain Bike Training Plan. Looking at the information and the style of plan you have created ( it looks great!!) but… as I say it will not be off road as such, although there will be some gravel ascents.

Do you feel i could ammend your plan to suit my limiters and goals?

I am a masters rider with multi day riding very much a part of my cycling history. However I want to up my game and ride strong and race.

I very much appreciate your considering my question and of course I will totally understand if you feel I would benefit from a different approach.

      Many thanks Sheila

      Sheila,

Glad to have you here! That sounds like a challenging and amazing race.

Our bikepacking plans work well for the road with a few minor modifications. We have many long-distance brevet riders follow this plan and some of our most challenging bikepacking races such as Tour Divide are predominantly dirt road.

When the plan calls for race-specific-terrain training, that means you ride on the road into a headwind! When the plan calls for technical skills training, mimic the time and intensity on the road. Those are the only mods needed to successfully use the plan to train for a road event.

      Lynda,

Thank you so much for the advice and reassurance on amending the plan to fit my goal. Phew! what a relief.. I have a fair knowledge of the mechanics of plan building, but this will just make it much more rounded and stretch me into those places i could so easily have ‘planned’ around! Brilliant. I’m petty excited to get to grips with this, so thank you Lynda.

      Whoo Hooo…..

      Lynda,
I just want to check the best plan to stack before the 5-10 day bikepacking plan. The plan app suggestaed the Masters cross Country Build, Peak Race followed by the Bikepacking plan. Given the endurance miles I will need to be aiming for, but also recognising my limiters, I want to build power and speed to lift my endurance ‘cruising’ speed, do you feel this is the right stack, or should I opt for the masters base plan?
      Many thanks Lynda,

      Sheila

      Shiela,

I agree with the Plan Finder tool. Follow the Masters cross Country Build, Peak Race to lift your power and speed before the 5-10 day bikepacking plan.
