ParticipantHi there!
Okay, just started with my 50 mile mtb PR program, (week 1), and so far, so good. Just a couple of questions. I want to do well in the long distance races starting with the Firecracker 50, then just about 2 weeks later with the UCS Wasatch Back, Pierres Hole, and possibly the P2P later in the summer. I also want to do Cat 1 mtb races starting on May 5th and continuing on until the 50 milers start. I know you allow for racing in the 50 mile PR plan, but my question is, can I expect to do well in the shorter distance races earlier on, or do I have to choose what I am going to focus on as far as short or long now? Should I be doing the cat 1 mtb plan now and then go to the 50 Pr plan later? or will the 50 mile PR program work for both?
Thanks!

KeymasterThe 50 miler PR will work for both. To have success at both XC and 50 milers I recommend following the 50 miler PR plan.
After week 1 on the plan I recommend jumping to week #6, then 8, then 11.
On 4/9/12 restart the 50 miler plan at week #1 and follow all 12 weeks to a peak at Firecracker 50.

Okay, just one question then. On Week 6, day 2 it says:
VO2 max intervals, after warm up, then, uphill do two sets of 4×4 min @ power L5 or heart rate zone 5 with three minutes recovery between intervals in power L1 or heart rate zone 1 and five minutes recovery between sets.
I need to understand this workout better. So, do I do three intervals at zone 5 of 4 min with a rest of three min between, followed by five minutes more of a cool down before I start the next set? I must be missing something.
Thanks! 🙂

KeymasterDo four intervals at zone 5 with three minutes recovery between intervals in power L1 or heart rate zone 1. This equals one set.
Then take a 5 min recovery period.
Then repeat the first set.
