ParticipantHi Lynda. I committed to doing a 100k mtb race coming up Saturday, 7/15. I didn’t use the Masters 50 mile training plan to prepare for this one as I didn’t think I was doing this race. I did manage to get a handful of 3-4 hour L2/tempo rides in in the last few weeks. I took a chance and did a full 4 hours on Saturday giving me a week before this race. I also took a chance and just finished a 3 week block instead of my normal 2 week block.
I can say that it’s likely that I’ve overreached and I’m thinking I need do the least volume this week that I can. For this week leading into the race today I did 2 X L5 3 minute intervals instead of 3 intervals as is on your 50 mile plan.
For your prescribed 2 x 8 minute threshold intervals for Wednesday should I just do a recovery ride or maybe just one of the 8 minute threshold intervals. I plan to be racing around 4:40-5 hours.
Thanks!

KeymasterHi DBentley,
I recommend spinning easy recovery pace from now until your race warm-up. That’s great you put in a solid training block. Now unload all of that fatigue to be fresh and strong on race day.

ParticipantThat sounds good. When you say easy recovery until race warm up you mean the day of the race, right? I shouldn’t do openers the day before?

KeymasterThe day before, start your ride at an easy pace then assess how your legs feel. If you detect any lingering fatigue in your legs miss out the openers. If you are fresh and ready to rock then continue with the openers.
